How to get the dreamy effect in Photoshop

How Do I Make Photos Look Dreamy?

The original photo was mostly blue and yellow, but after experimenting with a colour balance adjustment I found a colour combination of purples and yellows that I liked. I then did some more tweaking for contrast, lightened the sky, performed a little noise reduction and sharpening… and then I realized I didn’t like how sharp the whole image was! See below for what I mean….

Crescent Moon over False Creek

I decided to step outside of my usual routine of shooting events and portraits and do some night-time / long exposure photography. Arriving just after 9pm at False Creek, I set up my camera at f/22 for 30 seconds, iso 100. I really like how smooth the water looks in this shot and how much light there still is in the sky.

On Granville Street in Vancouver, BC

Granville Strip

Downtown Vancouver is one of my favourite places to be, especially at night when the lights turn on. To get this image, I shot in bulb mode with a 10-22mm lens at 22mm (however, with my crop sensor it was really about 35mm), and held it for a few seconds (enough for the cars to drive past me). After adjusting for the white balance,…

Rings of Fire

Here’s another photo that I shot at the Moon Festival. It almost reminds me of the planet Saturn, the way the streaks of fire seem to make rings around a circle. I love how a projection of Still Moon Arts’ logo is framed in the middle behind the performer. How to achieve this effect: shoot in bulb mode. The long-exposure enables the performer to…

Lantern Installation

I shot this image inside the Renfrew Ravine in Vancouver, BC during the 11th annual Moon Festival. This is one of many installations that were set up in the ravine that night. The lanterns were hung from tree branches above our heads, reminding me of Christmas decorations. I really like how the dried leaves were incorporated into the lanterns themselves, giving them that autumn look….

Shoot for the Moon

I took this photo during my first attempt at low-light/night photography using my sister’s 75-300mm Canon lens. It looks like the moon has taken a lot of hits for us, doesn’t it? Originally I was hoping for it to be as full as possible, but now that I think about it, it’s the shadows on the side of the moon that revealed the crater…
